At the end of 2018 I started writing my first poetry book. The theme? My personal story about sexual abuse and the impact it has had on my life. The idea of writing a book has been with me for some time, I was just waiting for the right timing.
While on vacation in Canada, several abuse-related situations crossed my path which I found remarkable. I couldn’t let go of the events that had taken place and just a few days after the holiday I understood why; the time had come to write down my own story.
During that trip, Marco handed me a poetry novel in a bookstore in Toronto saying “this is something for you”. I had never heard of the author, Rupi Kaur, but as I started to browse the book, I knew immediately what it was about. It was a collection of poems about sexual abuse. The poems I read touched me deeply. I felt I had to buy this poetry novel so that I could quietly read it later on. I also found a second book of poetry by the same author, and bought them both.
When we got back home, I started reading. What a touching story, so much recognition. I read into the evening and soon lost track of time. There were moments when I just stared into the darkness and cried. I then opened my laptop and started writing my own story. I continued writing the next day. By the end of the day I had the first draft of my own story on paper.
In the following months I let the concept take hold of me. Every now and then I read it over again and refined it. At the same time, I was busy designing this website which also took a lot of time and energy. As I focused on the website, I left the poetry book with the confidence that it would naturally present itself again at the right time.
My website is live now! Yes! And with that, the time has now come again to focus again on the poetry novel. To be continued..
If you would like to stay informed on the progress of the poetry book, I regularly post status updates on Facebook and Instagram!
